Reusable Bag Shopper Loyalty Project

In this Ontario Ministry of the Environment funded project, the RCO has partnered with the City of Sault Ste. Marie to investigate opportunities for reducing the number of plastic, single-use, carry-out shopping bags, while examining how best to influence shoppers to invest in and continue to use, reusable bags.

This pilot, dubbed the Shopper Loyalty Program, is part of a broader, voluntary initiative between MOE, RCO, Retail Council of Canada, Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors, Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, and Environment & Plastics Industry Council, to reduce by 50% the distribution of single-use plastic bags by 2012.

Integral to this pilot project is the participation of Sault Ste. Marie’s retail community. The retailers have been asked to help RCO develop and implement the pilot program, promote the initiative with their customers, encourage use of reusable bags, as well as track and provide the relevant statistical information and data. To date more than 50 local retailers have confirmed their participation.
