New 3RCertified Initiative – Offers Businesses and Institutions the Chance to Demonstrate Their Commitment to 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Principles – First Program Of Its Kind in North America

TORONTO, Oct. 20, 2011 /CNW/ - With more than 60% of the solid waste sent to Ontario landfills coming from the institutional, commercial and industrial (IC&I) sectors, the time is right to offer businesses and institutions a real and meaningful incentive to improve their performance in the areas of waste reduction and diversion.

The Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO) is proud to announce the launch of the 3RCertified Waste Diversion Certification Program. This exciting initiative is the first of its kind in the world. Businesses and institutions seeking to become accredited to the 3RCertified standard will need to demonstrate conformance to a series of rigorous criteria, and their performance will be verified through an onsite evaluation conducted by an RCO representative.

"The 3RCertified initiative is a great way for progressive organizations in Ontario to reinforce their commitment to sound environmental principles," said Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of the Recycling Council of Ontario. “Businesses and institutions meeting the 3RCertified standard and earning certification will see real improvement in their waste reduction and diversion performance. And that means significantly less material being sent to Ontario’s landfills.”

The 3RCertified initiative is supported by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
